What to Know About Adoption

Every adoption journey is unique, but all begin with learning. Understanding the different paths to adoption, the legal requirements, and how adoption may impact your life helps you prepare emotionally and practically.

Whether you’re just starting to explore or ready to move forward, ABSA provides the guidance and education you need to make informed decisions with confidence.

Our Adoption Process

Our process is designed to be clear, compassionate, and tailored to you. From your first conversation with us through matching and finalization, you’ll work with a dedicated caseworker who ensures you’re supported, informed, and never alone. We handle the legal steps so you can focus on building your family.

Step 1: Contact Us

Get in touch with A Baby Step Adoption to learn about adoption and your family building options. We’ll walk you through the process and answer any questions you have about us or adoption.

Step 2: Attend an Information Session or Private Meeting

These sessions are free, and held virtually. They are meant to inform you about the process of adoption, so that we can make sure everyone is on the same page. View upcoming events.

Step 3: Meet Your Caseworker

Your caseworker will be here to support you during the adoption and beyond, always available to answer questions, address concerns, and support you in any way they can.

Step 4: Complete Your Home Study

To ensure that your home is suitable for a child, we will conduct a home study and interview, as required by law. Learn more about home studies.

Step 5: Join Our Match Program

Once your home study has been completed, you are ready to officially begin the adoption process. We’ll help you create a profile that shows birth mothers who you are and what kind of parent you will be.

Step 6: Match With a Birth Parent

Once you are chosen by a birth mother, you will have an opportunity to get to know them. This is the time to begin preparing for the arrival of your new family member.

Step 7: Arrive Home With Your Child

After birth, there is typically a brief waiting period for the birth mother to affirm her decision, then the adoption will be finalized. Take your child home and enjoy your new family!
